A noose was found May 11 hanging in front of a window at Crofton Middle School, the school's principal said in a letter sent to parents. Download the WBAL app Anne Arundel County police released surveillance photos of two people they were searching for in connection with the investigation. Police said on May 12 that officers have arrested Connor Prout, of Crofton, and John Havermann, of Pasadena, both 19. Both were charged with hate crime, trespassing and disorderly conduct charges. The principal's letter indicated that the noose was found around 11 a.m. in front of a window that looks out on the courtyard and was visible to a teacher planning room and to students. School officials believe the noose was placed on a light by someone who gained access to the roof at some point on the night of May 10 and not during the school day. "There's just no question that it's very disturbing," Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesman Bob Mosier said. Mosier said he believes the suspects used some pallets to create a ladder and climb up onto the roof. The noose was removed, and school officials called police. Mosier said he's unsure exactly how many students or faculty saw the noose. "Some students were texting their parents to make them aware of it and parents were calling the school," Mosier said. "This incident is clearly disturbing on many levels. While it appears to have no connection to our instructional day or any instructional unit our students are currently studying, we cannot ignore the intolerant message this act conveys," the letter read. "We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive school community. We will not let this incident change that, and we will continue to work with county police to try and ascertain who the culprits are." The principal spoke with students about the issue during the school day. Resources are available for any student or adult who needs it regarding this situation. "We will just have to interview these kids and find out exactly what their motive was and what they were thinking when they did this," Anne Arundel County police Lt. Ryan Frashure said. "We're hoping that our students here realize the severity of these incidents and realize that they certainly have an impact members of our community." Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Dutton at 410-222-8772. Also on WBALTV.com:
